I have owned this book since it first came out years ago and am so happy it became available for my kindle. I know I'll always have a copy. Part of the reason this book is intriguing is because Carys, the heroine, is a rope dancer, the hero, Telor, is a minstrel and the 'secondary' hero, Deri, is a dwarf. Roberta is so knowledgeable about medieval times - she makes it very interesting to view the life from a 'lower class' point of view. Of course, lower class does not mean they are not people of honor and that 'upper class' people are naturally people of honor. There are villains and heros in all people, of course. Roberta always tells a good story - there's humor and love and a real picture of life in those times. I recommend any story by Roberta.

I Love Roberta Gellis historical romance. Im going back to enjoy them all again wish they were all available on !
Excellent historical fiction set during the succession wars in England between the rule of Henry I and Henry II. The story is unusual in that its subjects are travelling entertainers not members of the nobility. Typically good work by Roberta Gellis.
I didn't care for this book but I motored on through then donated it.
i consider Gellis to be one of the premier romance writers around. this is a nice change from her novels about upper class, since it deals with the lower classes in medieval society.
This novel takes us to the "under classes" in the Middle Ages. We are witnesses to their mostly dangerous and insecure lives. Yet we don't see it that way at all. Our view is their view and they laugh, love and live. Yes, it's dangerous dirty and to me, a modern, almost unbelievable. But our author doesn't pity, preach or pontificate she observes from their point of view and it is a great story.
I loved this one. I have been enjoying author's medieval series. This one is not part of a series, although it is set in that time period. It would be a good one to get a flavor of Gellis's writing.Memorablle
I have owned this book in paperback for years, and was happy to be able to get it for my kindle. Ms. Gellis writes a good story, and the best part of this book is the main characters are not among the nobility, for a change. The descriptions of life among the common folk really give a feeling for what it may have been like for the common folk- not everyone lived in luxury. The love story was predictable, but the details made it a story I have re-read & enjoyed many times over the years.
